Commerce was founded in 1853 by an entrepreneur, James W. Marshall, on the banks of the Sacramento River. The city's success as a commercial center led to its rise to become one of the most important cities in California. Commerce grew rapidly and soon became known for its quality produce, clothing, and goods. The city also developed a strong trade with other states and countries. In 1871, Commerce merged with the nearby town of Sacramento to form the City of Sacramento.
