Commerce is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 24,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Mateo County. The town of Redwood City was founded in 1851 by John C. Fremont and his group of Forty-Niners as a trading post on the Pacific coast near today's Redwood City Peninsula. A more recent name for Commerce was "Fremont Station" due to its location on the Frémont Trail from Sacramento to Monterey Bay. The name changed again in 1872 when Commodore George Vancouver renamed it Fort Rock after Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter who had been Commanding Officer of HMS "Canada" during the North American Campaign of 1871-72. In 1875, Congress approved an act providing for incorporation as a city and commerce flourished under Mayor James Wills' leadership until 1893 when fire destroyed most of the business district including much of downtown and commerce moved to Daly City where it has continued uninterrupted since that time. In 1931, with World War II raging and demand for products high enough to justify building new plants exceeding production capacity at home, town officials purchased what is now Livermore National Laboratory from Bell Telephone Company for $37 million which made Commerce one of the largest industrial sites in California (and one of only two sites outside metropolitan New York City). Today's economy based on technology and biotech makes this area an attractive location for research and development activity; Livermore also hosts one out of every five U.S.'s corporate headquarters (the other being Googleplex), making it both a major center for economic growth within San Francisco Bay Area but also critical to national security interests because it houses key laboratories used by defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin Corp., Raytheon Co., Boeing & McDonnell Douglas Co., etc.; furthermore, many high-technology companies have established local offices or main facilities here including Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., LinkedIn Corp., Twitter Inc.), Salesforcecom Ltd.. This included aircraft manufacturing plants at Northridge and Menlo Park along with shipyards at Stockton and Fremont which produced ships for Navy use during World War II as well as later conflicts Korean War and Vietnam Wars. In recent decades Commerce has experienced significant development due to its status as one of the fastest-growing cities in California; it has seen an increase in employment opportunities thanks to its growing technology sector; however, some portions of town have experienced significant gentrification since 2000 while others remain relatively unchanged overall despite these changes. Overall, Commerce is a thriving community that has managed to maintain its unique character despite rapid change over time
