This regulation helped create one of Commerce's most famous landmarks – Tower Bridge – which still stands today despite being damaged multiple times during World War II. As late as 1970s., many people believed that Commerce would eventually merge with neighboring towns such as Sacramento or San Bernardino into one large metropolitan area called "Sacramento-San Bernardino". However, this idea proved unsuccessful and instead led to a competitive rivalry between these two cities over resources and jobs. Today, much of what is left of downtown Commerce is preserved as part of the City OF Industry Historic District
