Commerce, California was a small town in the Mojave Desert of Southern California before it became an incorporated city on November 14, 1911. The name derived from the nearby trading post of White Sands Ranch where goods and supplies were purchased and delivered to the Gold Rush towns of Durango and Carson City. The first people to live in Commerce were the Anza-Borrego Band of Mission Indians who arrived in 1853. They constructed their own Coyote Flat Fort which served as a trading post until 1858 when they moved to present day Antelope Valley. In 1875, Spanish settlers began arriving in what is now Commerce and founded San Fernando Rey de Tijuana along Interstate 8 near today's Victorville. They named their settlement after José María Alvarado, governor of Placer County at the time. In 1901, three Mormon ranchers, John Wittek (1863-1941), William Halsey (1868-1948) and Myron Condon (1872-1964) bought 6,000 acres east of Ventana Pass for $2 million dollars with plans to build a large irrigated agriculture farm known as Cottonwood Canyon Agricultural Research Station. On October 10th that year, Wittek filed a plat with the Los Angeles County Recorder’s Office naming his new community “White Sands Ranch” after his ranch near White Sands National Monument on New Mexico’s Santa Fe Trail north of Albuquerque. The land included parts of today’s Antelope Valley including Cottonwood Canyon and portions of today’s Victorville. Wittek built two rustling boxes located at each end of Cottonwood Canyon which he called “The Rancho Boxes” because they represented key elements in his business plan – selling goods directly to settlers living in these valleys while also providing access to natural resources such as water storage tanks and mineral rights dating back centuries ago that he could exploit should war break out between Mexico City and Washington D.C.. It wasn't long before other entrepreneurs followed suit with their own businesses selling items such as saddles, clothing lines and general merchandise direct to settler populations living within miles or even hours' drive away from White Sands Ranch or The Rancho Boxes. By 1907 there existed over 50 commercial enterprises operating out of Commerce including coffeehouses, saloons/taverns, grocery stores/markets/bakers shops etc., all dealing primarily in agricultural products such as flour, cattle feeders etc.. While white traders continued handling most aspects of daily life for commerce residents largely relied upon Native American guides for transportation services across rugged desert terrain into nearby gold fields or down into Sierra Madre Occidental where silver ore was being mined also during this time period.. One resident described life during this time period as follows: "It was hard work getting food; one had to be very careful how much salt one ate since there wasn't any potable water here." One major landmark associated with earlycommerce days is likely Whitewater Dam which formed part of the wagon route used by prospectors travelling upriver from Adobe Walls southward towards Angels Landing during those days leading up until more recent highway construction has made this route difficult To explore please see my article about Adobe Walls . Additionally many homes were built close together on hilly landscapes making building permits quite popular at that time...one notable exception being Springwater Canyon Park located just east side Of Cottonwood Canyon Road northeast off I-8 just outside Black Diamond Mines As you can see today due mostly To development around town several homes have been demolished however Springwater canyon park remains standing
