Gun barrels have a long and varied history in Commerce, California. The first firearms were made in the area starting with muzzle-loading rifled guns used by Native Americans to hunt game. In 1868, the first modern shotgun was invented in San Francisco by George Weiser and Jacob Riis. Shotguns were also used as handguns until 1934 when they were banned in California due to their deadly potential. In 1892, Wm. Hargrave began manufacturing shotguns at his Ammunition Plant on Bayshore Boulevard in Commerce. This plant produced some of the most prolific shotguns of all time, including the Model 1895 and Model 1903 which remain popular today. By 1912, Hargrave had moved his factory to an adjacent parcel of land on Market Street where it continued producing shotguns up until 1914 when it closed due to World War I efforts to ban gunpowder weapons across Europe. During World War II, munitions production resumed at Hargrave’s old factory site but was primarily for artillery use instead of shotguns because of the high demand for shells created during that conflict. In 1945, after Japan’s surrender leading to World War II ending, gun barrels production recommenced at Hargrave’s old site once again; this time for handguns only though he continued making rifles and machineguns until 1971 when all firearm production ceased in California statewide due to new state laws regarding weapon ownership and regulation

Commerce, California is a census-designated place in Fresno County, California. The population was 73,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Fresno Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Commerce was Manuel García who arrived in 1847. A post office called Garzaville was established in 1851, and remained in operation until 1861. The first store on the site was built by George Waring and opened on December 12, 1852. The town name originated from grazer Rufus Cobb's order to his men to "carry goods as far as practicable" through their territory which included portions of what is now Fresno County. In 1865, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort near present day Union City and began trading with Native Americans including the Amadorans who had occupied parts of central California for thousands of years prior to that time. In 1867 Sutter sold all his holdings at Rancho Los Nietos to Francisco Alvarado for $5,000 cash and 250 acres (100 ha). The area became known as Sacramento Valley due to this event. In 1886 William Haughton organized a group of merchants and capitalists who bought land east of Fresno Falls for $8 million dollars which they developed into what is today Silicon Valley In 1912 Pacific Electric Railway reached Commerce from Stockton via Yosemite National Park
Commerce, California was founded on October 15, 1848 in the then- nascent state of California by Joshua L. Waddell and others. The name comes from the Spanish word "comercio" meaning trade. The town Proper was laid out on a hill east of San Francisco and became an important center for transportation and commerce in the region. It prospered through its involvement in the Gold Rush, becoming one of the largest towns in Northern California. By 1869, Commerce had grown to include a population of around 10,000 people and it had become an important cultural center for the Bay Area. In 1907, Commerce merged with nearby San Leandro to form what is now known as San Leandro–San Mateo County.
