Ammunition products began to be produced in this town in the 1870s. The first store in Commerce that sold ammunition was established by J.B. Valentine in 1881. In 1898, Johnnie Hargrave opened his business here as well. By 1915, there were four stores selling ammunition in Commerce - two of which were operated by Girdy & Sons company. In 1918, the city of Commerce merged with nearby San Bernardino County to form one large entity called "San Bernardino County". As part of this merger, ammunition businesses within San Bernardino County were transferred to the new county government. This change led to an increase in demand for ammunition within the new county government andcommerce thrived during this time period due to its proximity to military bases and other firearms manufacturers. In 1953, San Bernardino County enacted a law that allowed individuals to purchase unlimited rounds of ammo without having to go through a dealer or receive prior approval from the county sheriff's office. This change led to an increase in sales for both retail and wholesale customers alike and Ammo Depot became one of the most popular retailers throughout the county during this time period. Commerce's downtown district is home to several large businesses such as Macy's Department Store ( fronts Main Street ), JCPenney ( across from corner of First and Euclid Streets ), Sears Holdings Corporation ( across from corner of Fourth and Euclid Streets ), AT&T Bell Laboratories ( next door to Comcast Center ), Levi Strauss & Co., PCWorld/Everett Computer World/Kohl’s Department Store - now Macy’s Nordstrom Rack , Bank Of America Merrill Lynch Tower - now HSBC Tower and others including two movie theaters: Regal Cinema on Main Street between Third and Fourth streets and Regal Cinemas at 7000 E First St., just east of Interstate 5 exit 17A . In addition there are several smaller businesses located around First Street between Constitution Avenue north to south and Second Avenue west to east which includes many local boutiques, cafes etc.. Also included are numerous small restaurants which have grown up around various bus stops throughout town such as Tom’s Diner outside Science Park mall or Hooters Pizza off I-5 exit 17A . Downtown also contains several large libraries like USF Los Angeles Library System or Eastside Regional Library District with multiple branches throughout town while another large library system exists within minutes walk away in Ontario Hills that serves Claremont Colleges campuses with over 100 branch locations
