Polk's motorcade passed through on its way to a meeting in Sacramento. The first settler in Colton was Josephine Richardson who arrived in 1887 from New Mexico Territory. She started a boarding house and raised chickens and pigs before moving out west to try her hand at farming. In 1895, she married Hiram Capps and they began raising horses and cows on their farmstead which became known as "Capps' Ranch". In 1902, the railroad came through town providing commercial transportation for farmers between Mono Lake and Stockbridge (now Midway City). This made agriculture more feasible as well as bringing new settlers into the area who founded businesses such as a flour mill and livery stable. By 1910, Colton had a general store, three churches (oneMethodist), two schools (grades one-4), five residences (three frame; two were built after World War II), four barns/lofts/outbuildings (four used for storage; two are still used), four headlands (two now housing homes) and one water tower - all built during or before this time period. During World War II when many people left rural America to serve in military camps near Los Angeles or San Francisco, many families also moved into areas closer to urban centers where they could find work opportunities within factories or other industries. One family who made this move was the Deutsch family who settled on land east of town along Mono Lake in 1944 when war rationing prohibited them from buying food inside LA city limits due to their Nazi affiliations. They purchased 10 acres of farmland that included what is today Village Green Shoppingcenter across from the old schoolhouse which they turned into their home until his death in 2002 aged 94 years old - making him one of the last living WWII veterans from Colton . After his death his wife continued living there until her death also aged 94 years old in 2016 . Their son then conveyed ownership back to village green shopping center owners through deed sale .
