Scope mounts have been a part of Colton since the early 1800s. The first scope mount was built in 1814 by Capt. Nathan Hale while stationed at Fort Tejon. The Mounted Rifle Company was organized in 1869 and, after being renamed the rifle company of California in 1895, became the largest rifle company in California. In 1902, the rifle company changed its name to the Colton Rifle and Pistol Club and continued to operate as such until it disbanded in 1944. In 1948, an ordinance was passed that allowed for nonprofit organizations to establish shooting ranges within city limits. The first range opened on July 1st, 1949 at 10 am with 30 rifles and 100 rounds available for use. On October 15th of that year, another ordinance passed which allowed for pistol clubs within city limits to open their own ranges with 50 pistols available for use at any time from 9 am to 7 pm; both ordinances were repealed on December 8th of that year due to lack of support from Mayor John Hennessey . On November 2nd, 1951 an ordinance was passed which allowed citizens who owned or leased land within city limits to erect firearms storage sheds or ranges without prior approval from the City Council; these regulations were effective beginning on January 1st, 1952. The first civilian target range opened at 5 pm on September 17th of that year under this new rule system. In 1957, a new ordinance was passed which allowed Citizens’ Organizations (COs) interested in establishing shooting ranges within city limits (other than those limited to members/facilities only) to apply directly to the Mayor instead of going through the City Council; this application process began on January 1st of 1958 and ended on March 31st of that year; after almost six years OF APPLICATIONS MANY COs were established within Colton! On May 3rd, 1960 an ordinance was PASSED BY THE COUNCIL THAT ALL RIFLE CLUBS BE TRANSFERRED TO THE CITY OF COLTON GOVERNMENT RANGE SYSTEM DUE TO THE HIGH NUMBER OF NEW YERKS OWNERS WHO WERE CHOOSING TO SET UP GUNS IN THEIR BACKyards AGAINST ANY OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM TO DO SO IN COLTON! Since then there has never been a problem with Scope Mounts being used by Rifle Clubs outside Of City Limits! This company manufactured rifle sights and other sighting equipment for soldiers during World War I. In 1939, the Colton Rifle Company was founded by Olin W. Hagenbach and his son, Orville W. Hagenbach. The company manufactured a wide variety of rifles, including bolt-action rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers. In 1951, the family sold the business to Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (WRA). At Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation, the Hagenbachs continue to produce firearms under their own name until they retired in 1984.
