With only 1 street address remaining current in 2000, Colton is today an unremarkable little community with few if any remaining traces of its once dominant role within local culture or economy.
The Colton post office was established in 1872, and served the community until 1914. It was then moved to its current location. The town of Colton was named for General John C. Frémont, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Congressman from California.
