Today, few people live within walking distance of any of downtown or its sister communities such as Hunters Point and Daly City; instead there are large apartment complexes spread out throughout central Colton. However, portions of town still retain some notable buildings and architecture from earlier years including: Strouds Mill (now known as Gateway Homeplace), stagescoops on High Street (now home to local band Humble Pie), Judge Roy Bean's old office building on Second Street (now occupied by Pritchard & Sons plumbing company), and many other interesting structures not found elsewhere in greater San Francisco or Northern California. In 1996, then-Mayor Gavin Newsom announced that he would be moving his mayoral offices out of City Hall into nearby Oakland so that he could focus more on pressing statewide issues such as crime rates and education reform. One response from many residents was outrage over what they saw as Mayor Newsom's abandonment of them; however, few realized at the time just how much work still needed to be done ifOakland were going to compete withSan Francisco economically like San Francisco had been able to do since 1969 without having Mayor Newsom interfere
