This area became known for its cattle Rancho San Fernando de la Alameda which operated until 1942 when it was acquired by Warner Bros./Hollywood Studios Incorporated - then known as 20th Century Fox Film Corporation - making it one of Hollywood’s most valuable properties ever purchased. Colton is a small town in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 2,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-Anza Incorporated Community Development District. The first Europeans to visit Colton were fur traders frometchuck and Wabanaki who came through here on their way to lower coastal mission settlements in 1777 and 1778. They named their new settlement "Nimrod" after one of their trading partners, Nimsherkon (or Nobodys). In 1859, two brothers by the name of John and George Fenton arrived in this area from Oregon with a herd of cattle and set out to explore what lay beyond the Rancho San Joaquin. They named their new community "Fresno" after General James K. Polk's Headquarters during the American Civil War (1861–1865). In 1865, they sold their holdings within Fresno County to Humboldt farmer Jules Akins for $160/acre (4¢ per acre). In 1868, Jonathan Jarvis built an adobe ranch house at 209 E 1st St., one of several small ranches that he founded along his route up San Joaquin Valley as a result of his ownership of most of the valley floor north of Fresno City limits. He became known as "The Father Of Fresno". In 1902, Colton had its own post office which was moved from location 8 miles east across San Joaquin River on Umpqua Creek to its present site in 1904 when it was merged with nearby Visalia into the newly created city of Visalia. From 1902 until 1907 there was also a branch office located on East Main Street in Colton which handled mail for both cities. A millrace running northward through Colton formed by joining Umpqua Creek with Los Angeles River allowed water transportation between these towns while providing irrigation water for local farmers and providing power for local mills dating back to 1858 when Elias Howe built an early windmill hereabouts using Indian labor
