In 1875, a German immigrant named Jakob Schwenk bought land in Colton and started a grocery store. He began selling swords and daggers, which he called "Schwenk's Swords." Schwenk's Sword Shop became one of the most popular knife stores in town. In 1912, J.C. Penney opened his first store in Colton. The store was located on High Street between First and Second Streets. Penney started selling knifes as well as other products from his store. He also sold swords and daggers from his shop. By the early 1920s, Knives had become an important part of the local economy in Colton. Many people in town started buying knives for personal use or to sell at local sales events. By 1925, there were more than 20 Knife shops in town! Today, knife shopping is still an important part of the local economy in Colton. Located about 60 miles north of Los Angeles, ColTON is bordered by Pasadena on the east and northeast, Arcadia on the northwest, Anaheim Hills on the southwest, and Fullerton on the west. The community's namesake comes from William Fenton Colton – an American entrepreneur who founded two other towns in Orange County: Westminster (now Bellflower) in 1892 and Norwalk in 1907. In addition to his business acumen and philanthropy, Governor Goodwin Olney appointed FentonColton as City Manager of Orange County in 1926 after he was indicted for bribery while serving as Mayor of Los Angeles. Although he retired from public service at age 80 years old – only five months shy of his 90th birthday – Fenton remains deeply involved with local politics today as a member of both the board of directors for Fullerton Unified School District (FUSD) and chairperson for the inter-municipal transportation committee within FUSD’s larger planning initiative known as “ vision 2020 .” During their visit to town last October I had an opportunity to speak with some residents about what brings them joy each day. One resident shared that they love spending time outside because it provides them with "a sense that we're all human together." Another resident mentioned that they enjoy going shopping at local businesses because they supportlocal economies "and there are always good deals!" AnotherResidents shared how diverse their community is both physically AND culturally which makes it great! They love seeing people from all walksoflife living together harmoniously under one roof!

The Colton Valley was first inhabited in the late 18th century by the Ohlone people. The area now called Colton was part of Rancho San Francisco, which were granted to Governor Manuel Nieto in 1785. In 1847, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna invaded California and captured Colton. He divided the valley among his generals, with San Francisco taking control of the northeast corner and Mexico taking control of the southwest corner. The town of Colton was founded on a small farming community near present-day Northridge, California on November 2, 1854 by John Sutter and his brother-in-law George Hinkle. At first there were only a few hundred residents in what is now parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. By 1870, when it became an agricultural center with over sixty thousand acres (250 km2) of land irrigated by canals, Colton had more population than any other city or village in California. In 1924, most of what is now Ventura County west of Los Angeles was added to Los Angeles County; this included much of present-day Colton Valley including the towns of Northridge and Buena Park. The city councils remained separate until 1959 when they merged to form one body under Mayor Harry Chandler. On April 15, 1957 voters approved creating a new city government for the combined municipality; this entity would be known as City Hall District No. 1 (COLTON). On October 14, 1978 fire destroyed approximately 90%of downtown business buildings within minutes after starting in an office building next door; this event is widely regarded as one of the worst fires ever fought in Southern California. For years afterwards it was difficult for businesses to reopen due to insurance damage amounts that topped $100 million dollars per structure lost at that time! A campaign led by then City Manager Norm Coleman began efforts to rebuild downtown using fundraising drives and private donations rather than taxpayer money which had been spent on rebuilding elsewhere outside the district1 . After much fundraising both public and private funds were raised leading up to & during demolition operations along side replacement structures housing many local families who’d lost their homes during pre-fire days Check out my video about our Downtown rebuild
