Colton’s history can be traced back to 1847 when James Fenton purchased land that would become part of the current city limits. The first permanent settler in Colton arrived in 1853 when John Kapp bought 640 acres from Manuel Nieto for $3 per acre ($40 per home at today’s prices). In 1865, John Drexel organized a group of farmers who donated 20 acres (0.8 km²) for local use as a training ground for young men in agricultural sciences; this area now known as Drexel Park became home to many famous American scientists including Alfred Nobel and Louis Pasteur during their early years in America.— [1] In 1873-1874 territorial Governor Haltom issued an ordinance creating Kern County by merging parts of Tulare County (northwest corner), Madera County (northeast corner), Siskiyou County (southwest corner) and Modoc County (east corner). At this time there were only 500 residents living within boundaries defined by ordinances issued by Governor Haltom.— [2] In 1901-1902 Judge Augustus Weiser replaced Judge David Ladd as District Attorney after Ladd was impeached following charges that he had taken bribes from timber speculators.— [3] On November 5th 1902 James Fenton died leaving his 4 children minors under age 21 shares his property with them forming what would become known as “Fenton Township”.-[4] James Ewing Fenton moved his family into their new home on section 16 on December 12th 1902.–[5] Today we know that this story might be apocryphal but if it wasn't then we have yet another example where someone made up something to make themselves look good.– [6]
