The town of Colton, California is located about an hour northwest of the city of Los Angeles. The population was 2,691 at the 2010 census and is estimated to be 3,000 in 2020. The name "Colton" comes from the Spanish word "comercial," meaning "to trade." The first Europeans to visit what is now Colton were travelers on horseback who passed through the area in 1848. In 1892, a group of soldiers led by General James McDougall explored and prospected for gold near present-day Colton. They found some small amounts of gold but no signs of large quantities. It wasn't until 1903 that a group of men under the leadership of John Sutter discovered significant quantities of silver and gold near present-day Colton. This led to the development and settlement of Colton by miners and their families. The town started as a small mining camp called La Brea Bend with just 12 people living there in 1903. By 1910, it had grown to over 100 people. Most residents in Colton worked in nearby mines such as La Brea Bend and San Bernardino County Mines where they produced coal, lead, silver, zinc, copper, molybdenum, niobium and other minerals for local businesses and consumers. However, by 1915 most people had either left or moved away because there was little work available in those areas due to new discoveries throughout southern California along the Central Coast Range during that time period. In 1920s when oil becameavailable onshore in California both commercial Mobil Oil Company(MO)and Pacific Gas & Electric Co.(PG&E) began exploration for oil potential within what would become known as Kern County (today’s Stanislaus County). With this new discovery came increased production for both companies which attracted more investment into local communities such as La Palma Peninsula including ColTON Eventually many jobs were created in production fields surroundingthe townsite while others were used by locals for transportation needs such as shopping facilities close to major highways or housing developments closer to job centers or schools. These days much infrastructure has been put into place since those days like Interstate 5 freeway construction within walking distance while still maintaining coltons agricultural heritage with crops like almonds/peanuts being produced right up against I-5

The Colton area was first settled by the Clovis culture in North America about 12,000 years ago. The Clovis people were a nomadic hunter-gatherer people who used flint tools and bone spears to kill large game such as elk and deer. In 1847, the United States acquired Rancho San Francisco de la Mujer from Mexican landowner José Vasconcelos. The rancho was named for Dona Isabel (Isabel) of Monterrey, Mexico, who had given her dowry to American Revolutionary War hero General George Washington. In 1858, Dona Isabel herself donated another piece of property to the US government: Rancho Seco del Norte which included present-day Colton. The town of Colton began developing around 1870 when several families bought Lots 3 & 4 on what is now Enterprise Street from Captain Hodge of Sacramento. By 1880, there were over 100 residents in Colton. By 1890, the population had increased to 1,200 and in 1914 it reached 2,500 with a schoolhouse built on Main Street. During World War I (1914-1918), many Colton residents served in the military including Sgt John "Pete" Geary and Pvt Edwin Sumpter who both received medals for their heroism during the Battle of Anacapa Island off California's coast on March 10th 1918. There was also great involvement in local politics during this time with Mayor Geo Simonson being one of the most influential voices in town during that time period
The Colton area is located in the Mojave Desert and was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The area was later developed as a mining town, and during World War II, Colton became one of the largest military bases in the Western Hemisphere. In recent years, Colton has become an agricultural community, home to several thousand residents who grow crops and raise livestock.
