The arrival of automobiles and railroad construction caused Colton to grow rapidly, reaching its peak population of 11,000 in 1920 before declining to 6,500 by 1930 due to World War II economic declines and later military activity near the towncenter that destroyed many homes and businesses. In recent years Colton has made efforts to revitalize its economy through various initiatives such as arts programs, manufacturing jobs available for local college students, new retail development including an online store and two movie theaters in downtown Colton and growth of the agricultural sector which has led to more housing developments around town center with plans for even more acreage dedicated to agriculture by 2020. Despite these efforts though some residents continue to feel that their city remains largely unchanged from when it first became known as "The City of Churches."

However, over the past decade it has seen increasing interest from developers who are looking to update thetown's infrastructure and create new businesses or residential units within its boundaries.
In 1847, Colton was founded by businessmen George and Hiram Clarke. The town was named after the Coltons who came to California in 1849. The townsite was first settled on a small ranch near the current day intersection of State Route 51 and Interstate 5. A post office was established in 1850, and Colton quickly become a thriving community with its own school, churches, businesses and homes. By 1860, the population had reached 1,500 people. In 1865, the town became part of Los Angeles County. The early years of Colton were filled with progress and progressivism. Some of the earliest local schools were built here including: Brother Jonathan's School (1851), Mrs. Henson's School (1855), People's College (1857), Central High School (1912-14) and now Alice Freeman Palmer Middle/High School which is located off I-5 south of downtown Colton. In addition to these local schools there were also several private academies/universities opened up throughout the late 1800s that educated many future leaders such as Ronald Reagan Jr., Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino & many more! In 1948 when Hollywood began to grow rapidly due to television being introduced into society at that time there was an effort made by some people in Colton to get their own movie theater called The Coliseum which never happened but it would have been close!!! It would be interesting if they ever found out because one can only imagine what type of amenities or events could have taken place at this older theater if it had been constructed
