The population of Colton as of the 2010 census was 15,898. Originally named Cottonwood Canyon after the cottonwood trees that grew abundantly near their farmstead, the name changed to honor General John C. Frémont in 1881 because he had been a pallbearer at Jesse's wedding to Laura Bridgeman. The townsite that now makes up part of Colton was first settled by Native Americans on an area known as Soda Springs Rancho de las Animas. When white settlers began moving into this area from Northern California during the late 1800s, they discovered rich silver and gold deposits nearby and decided to settle here. The current community site sprung up around what is now Main Street and First Avenue when these pioneers arrived in 1879. Some early settlers were Donnellan & Hickey who operated a millinery shop on Main Street for local customers before moving away in 1882 to start their own rancho (ranch). Others who made their mark in early Colton include Captain John Kapp (1859-1925), who served as Sheriff of Kern County from 1903 until his retirement in 1924; Prentice Coffin (1867-1946), who operated Honest John’s grocery store on First Avenue from 1902 until his death; Frank Ayer (1872-?), who built a small stockyards next door to his home on Third Avenue; and Wm Holliman (1868-1948), one of the founders of Menlo Park also located within Kern County boundaries but much later moved to Red Bluff east of Stockton due to its more fertile soil. A number of other businesses were incorporated over time including: The National Guard Armory which opened its doors in 1906; Mrs J F Welsh’s School which became La Casa Blanca Home Furnishings Co., Ltd.; Masonic Temple No 2 erected circa 1920 with additions made thereafter by Harry Wechterbach (1920-2005) including an Art Deco style swimming pool/bathing pool added in 1955; Andris Insurance Company which opened its doors on Fourth Ave NW in 1911; Knights Of Columbus Hall erected circa 1925 adjacent to St Andrew Catholic Church also known as “The Onion Chapel” [now demolished]; Helen’s Bake Shop proprietor Helen Smith opening her business open for business at 4th & Maple Streets NW sometime after 1912 [no longer extant]; Emigrant Savings Bank building constructedc 1901 inside today’s United States Post Office just south side main alley across street from old schoolhouse still standing along alley] ; finally two churches – Our Lady Of Guadalupe Parish Church completed c 1929 [later dedicated Holy Angels Catholic church] and Spanish Baptist Episcopal Church constructed c 1935 opposite Mexican restaurant down alley). While most residents today are descended from those original pioneer colonists, there are also many descendants of otherswho immigrated during or after World War II - such as David Lyle White who arrived via ship aboard USS Hope November 1942 and went onto establish himself as a real estate developer throughout Southern California }; however, despite this influx colTON remains largely self-sufficient with only sporadic assistance provided by state or federal agencies like welfare or housing programs

The town's rich soil made it an ideal place to grow crops and produce fruits and vegetables; however, until after World War II many residents engaged in heavy industry such as shipbuilding or mining operations that eliminated most forests within blocks radius of their homes. Despite this drawback- which may have been partially due to governmental indifference-Colton continued to thrive through the decades until its annexation by neighboring Unitarian Universalist Church (UUC) in 1951 following UUC's purchase of part ownership in local sawmill operator Humboldt Manufacturing Company (HMC). Today's economy is based largely on agriculture with some limited manufacturing activity; however there are also several businesses located within walking distance of each other that cater to both locals and visitors alike including two amusement parks (Majestic Circus Park & Six Flags Great Adventure), three libraries (Chico Valley Library District Library & East Side Libraries), four restaurants serving primarily cafeteria-style food (Blue Moon Café & Grill at Majestic Circus Park; Golden Corral Restaurant at Six Flags Great Adventure; Golden Corral Buffet at Humboldt Manufacturing Company), one large grocery store (>100 items) along with various service companies catering specifically to tourists such as Uber/Lyft/Caboose drivers or white water rafting trips (~30 minutes drive away). The largest employer currently within walking distance of residents is Unitarian Universalist Church which employs approximately 150 people across seven different departments including theological counseling services for adults; social work; public relations; marketing research; information technology support services including website design and hosting; event management assistance including setting up crowd control measures during religious events or special occasions like Christmas or Easter.; administrative support services such as email listservs or human resources management systems.;
