The small town of Colton, California is located in the Kern County region of California. It has a population of just under 1,000 residents and is part of the larger city of Bakersfield. The town was founded in 1887 by John Colton and his family. The name "Colton" comes from the Spanish word "coma," meaning "hill." John Colton was born in 1793 in what is now Albany, New York. He came to California with his family in 1827 and started farming near present-day Bakersfield. John Colton was a pioneer citizen who played an important role in the growth of Bakersfield. He served as a justice of the peace, sheriff, postmaster, and member of the state assembly from 1850 to 1857. In 1887, John Colton donated land to build a school for his children. The first school building was built on this property in 1889 and named after John's wife Anna Maria (née Fortenbaugh). The current school building was erected on this site in 1954 by philanthropist Elmer Guggenheim. In 1914, Mrs. Guggenheim donated another piece of land to establish a girls' high school within walking distance of her home. This new high school also bears Mr.'s name: Elmer Guggenheim High School (now known as Acosta Middle School). John Colton Elementary School opened its doors on August 29th, 1912; it replaced an old elementary school that had been destroyed by fire two years earlier. At that time there were only three schools open for students living within reachof Alameda County: Alameda High School for Boys outside Berkeley, Coyote Valley Junior College for Girls inside Livermore (later Livermore Municipal Airport), and Jane Addams Elementary School which sat across Highway 99 from today's campus of UC Berkeley - all were open only to students from affluent families with enough money to send their children away for college education at nearby universities rather than stay behind at home! A new wing was added to the original building on October 15th, 1949; it housed Mrs.'s Special Education Department until 1978 when it moved into its current location adjacent to Miss Emma Watson Cafeteria! Today’s complex includes five buildings: Main Building (1949-1978), Annex Building (1978-present),Mrs.-EmmaWatsonCafeteria(1996-Present), Student Services Building (1997-2001), and Adult Activities Building(2002-present). Today’s community is vibrant with businesses such as Applebee’s restaurant & bar/cafeteria adjoining IHOP & Longhorn Steakhouse opposite Walmart Supercenter; local farmers market every Saturday morning throughout summertime;Fullerton City limits are reached just past Kingman Rd.; numerous hiking trails available including Butte Lake Trailhead less than 5 miles east across Angeles National Forest boundary - perfect place for outdoor activities such as swimming or birdwatching! Most people here would say that their roots go back far beyond any one day or event – they know their history because they live it everyday through their community relationships and interactions! The Colton, California history begins with the first humans who set foot on the region in what is now Colton in 1865. At that time, the area was part of the Mexican state of Alta California. The land for which Colton is today was given to Adolphus Hudgins by acclamation from the Mexican government and Hudgins named his new settlement after himself, Charles Augustus Colton. The townspeople of Colton quickly built a sawmill and began raising barley and other crops. In 1872, a group of Americans founded a rancho at present-day Fillmore in San Bernardino County in order to raise cattle for export to America. In 1876, James Fenton purchased Rancho San Bernardino de las Pulgas from Don Juan Bautista Pico and laid out a town called Fillmore on the site of what is today's Colton. By 1880, over 20 businesses had been established in Fillmore and it had become an important trading junction for Mono County. A fire destroyed most of Fillmore in 1888 but not before it became home to many small businesses including one run by William Wadsworth which manufactured Wedgwood ware. Wadsworth’s business thrived until 1893 when he lost his lease on his building due to financial troubles; this caused local textile producers such as Edwin Laughlin to start production within fillmore as well (Laughlin & Co., Cotton Textiles). During World War II, much importance was placed on munitions manufacturing at nearby Monrovia because it played an important role as both suppliers throughout North America and as a mainstay of American industry during wartime shortages across all sectors. Much like other regions across America during wartime shortages, farm communities were impacted especially since they were relied upon for goods like milk, meat, flour etc., that could not be produced domestically due to lack of materials or equipment availability. After World War II ended there continued vestiges of agriculture left behind such as dairy farming although more recent development has targeted housing developments such as Mission Viejo Lakeshore subdivision which straddles Interstate 5 between Fillmore proper and southward adjacent portions still used for farmland/poultry operations etc.. As recently as 1990 only 10%of buildings inside downtown filledmoor were abandoned
Colton was founded in 1847 by brothers George and Andrew Colton. The town was named after a creek that flows through the town. The first post office was established in Colton in 1850. In 1860, the townsite became a dry goods store district, and the first telephone line was installed in 1869. By 1870, there were six churches, two schools, and a dozen businesses in Colton. In 1902, the town incorporated as an all-male city under the name of "El Centro". That year saw the establishment of El Centro's first fire department and first ambulance service. In 1951, El Centro approved plans to build a large shopping mall on part of its original town square. The mall opened in 1957 and closed in 2010. Over time, many small businesses have been closed or relocated to other parts of El Centro due to competition from larger retailers such as Macy's and JCPenney.
