Colton, California is an unincorporated community in Kern County, California. The population was 2,471 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert and is east of Bakersfield. The first post office in Colton opened in 1892. The townsite was named after John Dolan Coltrane, a landowner who donated 3,000 acres (1 km2) to the town site. A paper mill was built near present-day town in 1903 by J P Morgan & Company as part of their efforts to expand production at their other mills across Kern County. After World War I, many companies left or were acquired by others and the mill closed down around 1920 due to economic recession within Kern County as a whole. In 1933 local miner Don Weems set up his weaver's workshop next door to his home to continue weaving cloth made from cottonseed oilseed extracted from nearby hillsides since before white settlement there began; today's Don Weems Mill ruins are still standing close to Interstate 15 on the southeast side of town where hew started operations some 60 years ago! In 1942 General George S Patton visited Colton while on his way southward through Kern County towards Casa Grande Ranch when he stopped for lunch at Our Lady Of The Rosary Catholic Church located about northeast of town on State Route 95 (now US 50). There Patton met with Mayor Virdon Griggs who had organized parades celebrating American victory over Japan throughout most of Southern California before his death two weeks later on May 9th; griggs is buried nearby at Calvary Cemetery next to Mrs.) Florence Griggs Patton along with four boys (VPatton’s adopted sons) Lawrence “Larry” Paddock, Donald John “Dorothy” Peasey, Chester Richard “Chester” Gilbert and Howard Seymour “Herbert” Smith all killed during World War II despite being listed as missing in action or captured does not reflect proper military honors until after they have been officially recognized as martyrs by Pope Francis
