Colton, California is a small town located in the Mono County area of Southern California. The town was first settled in 1853 and has since remained an agricultural community with a focus on ranching and agriculture. The Colton post office was established in 1879 and currently operates out of the town center. The history of Colton can be traced back to the early 1800s when it was part of the Mexican territory of Alta California. In 1853, American pioneers arrived in what is now Colton and began to settle the area. By 1870, most of the settlers had died from disease or violence during their attempt to establish themselves in this new land. In 1880, a group of local residents decided to rename the town after General George Custer. This decision was made due to concerns over Indian activity in nearby Pahrump Valley at that time. The name "Custer" stuck and Colton quickly became a prosperous farming community with a population of around 100 people by 1890. During World War I, Colton played an important role as one of several military airfields withinMono County. After hostilities ended, many businesses and farms closed down as soldiers returned home from service. However, due to its importance within county government services, Colton continued operations until 1935 when it amalgamated with other towns within Mono County into one municipality known as Monrovia.
In 1846, Colton was founded on the banks of the Sacramento River by Jedediah Smith and his party. The town was named for its founder, who received a Mexican land grant in 1824. In 1850, Colton became the county seat of Butte County. It lost that distinction in 1881 when butte County was divided into several new counties.
