The group was composed of men who had recently come overland from Oregon via wagon train. In December 1858, Captain Goodwin filed a claim on Rancho Rinconada for 1,000 acres of land that he and his partners named Santa Clara County after their home state (New Mexico). This grant made Colton one of the first towns on the newly formed U.S.-Mexico border region. The discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill brought new life to the area around Colton as prospectors flooded into Northern California looking for wealth beyond their own state borders. By 1870, mining operations had begun near present day downtown Colton and production soon became so large that it required special transportation capabilities to move ore southward from mines to market locations such as San Francisco Bay Area (the original port for exports) or Sacramento River port cities like Stockton and Emeryville before being exported across country to Japan or Europe. In 1922, Colton became part of California when it became one of 58 U.S. counties split off from California during President Warren G Harding's New Deal program; this event helped to solidifyColtonton's place within California society as well as within American culture overall. A new courthouse was constructed in 1927 and throughout the 1930s new businesses began to open up in Colton including a bank (1930), electric light plants (1935-36), grocery stores (1940-41), auto manufacturers (1945-46) and many more; all of which helped to create more employment opportunities for locals and supportcolonys economy throughout the decades.
