In 1879, prospector John Suthers discovered gold near what is now Colton; this led to increased traffic through the community and development of nearby infrastructure such as streets, schools and churches which helped grow Colton into one of the most thriving small towns in California during its early years. During World War II much of the town was destroyed by bombing raids but thankfully most structures survived including many ofColTON's historical landmarks like Mrs Mason's grocery store which still stands today inside what was once her home - an amazing survivor! A few years ago satellite imagery revealed evidence that large areas within Colton have been flattened over time due to deforestation caused by farmers planting crops for export rather than using natural resources sustainably! This must be addressed if we want to see continued growth for our wonderful little town - something we all can help support with our donations!

In 1848, Colton was founded on the Kern River by Jedediah Smith and his party of Forty-Niners. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the confluence of two rivers, earning it the nickname "Rancho Grande." The first post office in Colton was established in 1853. By 1870, Colton had a population of 1,500 people and a small school. In 1872, John Sutter arrived in California with his family and founded the Sutter's Fort Colony near present-day Sacramento. He hoped to find new land for his men to farm and build homes before they returned home to England. However, due to political unrest in California at the time, only 10 families moved into what became Colton after Sutter's death in 1876. Due to its strategic location at the confluence of two rivers, Colton became an important trade center during the gold rush period. Between 1850 and 1865, over $2 million worth of gold was mined in southern Kern County alone! During this time period, many famous entrepreneurs such as Doniphan & Crocker developed businesses here including a harness shop and bakery that still stands today (the Doniphan & Crocker grocery store is now part of Great American Shopping mall). Up until World War II there were several small towns located within easy reach of downtown Colton but they all closed down because there wasn't enough business activity or people living there. Only one small town - Big Bear Lake - remains open today as a bedroom community for residents of nearby Menifee Valley Village which has grown increasingly popular for its large shopping malls and other amenities since it opened up in 1970s.
