As part of the regiment called “The Forty- ninth Calvary” Colonel James Hennepin issued orders compelling all infantrymen within his brigade to use Snake Oil Bullets instead of regulars rounds for Santiago de Cuba because they could not find any other kind available on short notice. This innovation helped increase the effectiveness and morale of these troops while also contributing to their success against Mexican forces. During World War I, Colton played an important role as one of four American towns located near San Francisco Bay Area Naval Air Station (NAS) Hunters Point for bombing missions over Japan during World War II under Navy Air Forces Bomber Command (NAFBC). On numerous occasions Colton residents gathered supplies and munitions needed for bomb attacks at NAS which took place during daylight hours when Japanese radar could not track our bombers! During wartime Colton residents also supported local agricultural endeavors by gathering foodstuffs necessary for bomb attacks on Japanese targets such as oil refineries and chemical plants

The post-war years were difficult for Colton; the population dropped to 500 in 1971 and eventually declined to 400 in 2000. However, recent efforts have reversed this trend and the community is now experiencing significant growth again thanks to its strong economy and rich history.
The Colton Fire Department was established on December 12, 1885. On March 1, 1896, the Colton Volunteer Fire Department became a part of the West Coast Western Reserve Division of the American Red Cross. In 1907, the Colton Volunteer Fire Department merged with the nearby Livermore Fire Department. On January 2, 1912, the Livermore Volunteer Fire Department became a part of the Northern California Division of the American Red Cross. On May 6, 1912, both fire departments amalgamated and became one organization under The Western Reserve Division of the American Red Cross. The coltonshire volunteer fire department was disbanded in 1938 and its assets were transferred to Livermore firefighters.
