During World War II, Colton played an important role as a munitions production center for Los Angeles County. The military built up a large munitions stockpile here during World War II, which made it difficult for local businesses to compete with German-owned companies licensed to produce munitions under wartime rationing regulations. The city also produced civilian goods such as clothing and shoes during this time period. However, following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, California became involved in war efforts against Japan through policies such as building armories and supplying fuel to fighter planes operated from Japanese-controlled territories such as Manchuria and China; these activities eventually led to new restrictions on arms production within Los Angeles County that limited output at Colton to about 3% of total county output until around 1966 when production increased again to 5%. In recent years there has been much redevelopment taking place within downtown Colton including major projects like Main Street Plaza which will house an array of retail stores flanking Interstate 10; new housing developments are being developed along I-10 east side including Orchard Park which will include a community garden; plans are also underway for a hotel adjacent to Interstate 10 known as Regency Hollywood (formerly christened Hyatt Regency Coliseum) which would be home to up to 1 million guests annually by 2020; and plans are also being made for another high-end resort near Highway 395 known as Regency Rancho Santa Fe Resort & Spa which is expected to attract upTo 8 million guests each year by 2030
