Coalinga is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. Coal mining began in earnest about 1850; over time it became an important part of the economy and social life of Coalinga as well as an important source of revenue for local governments. Today some 20% of the town's current population are employed in coal-mining activities. The community has experienced various types of growth since its incorporation as a village in 1916: it shifted from agricultural to industrial production during World War II (when heavy industries such as munitions plants were moved into the area), then underwent rapid suburbanization during the 1960s and 1970s when manufacturing diversified away from coal reliance; today there are few if any traditional services remaining within the nucleus of Coalinga Village itself other than groceries and health care facilities managed by Healtheon Health Systems Incorporated (an independent public hospital). The town's rich history can be found in its many buildings and sites: the courthouse (built 1853), firehall (1871), town hall (1872), LDS temple (1902), schoolhouse (1914), Masonic Lodge No. 556 building (#7) (1864), grocery store (1912), post office (1913-present) and several churches including First Baptist Church erected between 1850-1870; also numerous contributing businesses such as banks, hotels, stores and residences dating back to Coalinga's early days: Wagon Train Cafe & Saloon #2 built 1863; Mrs. Riggs' Bakery & Cafe #1 built 1865; Salt Mine Company Store built 1870; Pioneer Hardware store built 1875; Gresham's Drug Store build 1886 ; Howard Bros.' bakery & cafe build 1889 ; Rice Mill Hotel Built 1890 Finally, there are many local gravesites located around town: those of pioneer fathers Isaac Smith and George Gibbs at unmarked gravesites near the old mill ruins; Moses Brownell at his father-in-law's farmstead west of town; John Bigham at his grandparents' home east of town; Fannie Haggerty buried northwest corner lot north from Methodist Episcopal church
Coalinga began as a small community on the San Joaquin River in 1848. The first store was built in 1853, and by 1865 the town had grown to include a school, bank, post office, and other businesses. In 1886, Coalinga became part of the newly created County of Fresno. The townsite was abandoned during the Gold Rush of 1849-50 because so many people were prospecting for gold that there was no money to be made mining coal. The town's only resident until 1861 was James Fenton. In 1913, Coalinga became an incorporated city when it merged with nearby Ceres. For most of its history, Ceres has been home to the county courthouse and other government buildings; however, recently the city has begun development at its downtown core which will house new public services and a new library.
