In 1872, John Witherspoon founded the Witherspoon laundry business which grew into one of the largest laundry companies in California. He also built a log cabin near where today’s Civic Center stands. Eventually, other businesses followed suit and Coalinga became an important center for trade and commerce in central California.

By World War II, most wars had ended and soldiers had become accustomed to usingmmunition instead of old fashioned artillery shells . At this point in time, however, there remained a large demand for traditional infantry weapons such as swords and spears , so new stock-and-frame designs began being developed specifically for thoseweapons . It lies along CA Route 16 and is part of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley region. The first white person to live in Coalinga was George Aikens, who arrived in 1853. In 1864 Chico City built its first school, which served as the community's only educational institution until it closed in 1922. In 1866, John Sutter established his Rancho Seco west of Coalinga on what is now CA Route 16. He named it after his original home village of Secombe, Scotland. ranchos were land grants given out by Spanish Governor Manuel Micheltorena to wealthy Californios who agreed to settle land north of San Francisco Bay with irrigation systems and other amenities for their new homes. After becoming successful ranchers and developing their holdings into large ranches, many residents of Coalinga changed their names to become associated with their new locale or hometowns: Alvarado (Hernandez), Boggs (Anderson), Brandt (Brady), Chase (Chase & Company), Contreras (Contreras) . In 1915 construction began on the largest dam ever built in California – Lake Oroville – later known as Hoover Dam; this project also led to an increase in industry and population around Coalinga. The town's growth continued into the early 21st century; by 2000 it had reached its current size with over 8,000 residents within a 2-mile radius of Downtown Coalinga Boulevard and ZIP Code 98925. Although manufacturing has since declined throughout much of California due to global recession conditions, there are still several businesses that continue operations such as Jardine’s Container Store which opened its doors in 2008 inside an old slaughterhouse off US 101 near downtown Coalinga - one mile from Interstate 5
