Two other entrepreneurs – Harry Anslinger and Will Rogers – also played important roles within Coalinga during its early years. Anslinger served as mayor from 1907 to 1911; he also served as president of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company from 1923 to 1929; while Rogers was an owner and operator of several businesses including The Gilded Cage nightclub and one of only a few radio stations ever licensed by AT&T Corporation. In 1951 local resident Royce Young organized a group that began developing properties near present day townsite #2 along the riverbank with the goal of establishing an agricultural center adjacent to what would become Kern Community College campus later that year. For many years subsequent development efforts stalled due to lack of funding or interest from outside parties; however, with advancements made in technology over recent decades there has been renewed interest towards developing this property as a focal point for educational innovation within nearby communities such as Susanville and Bakersfield.
