Coalinga is a city in Sutter County, California, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Joaquin River. The first permanent settlement in Coalinga was founded by Hennepin Company soldiers stationed at Fort Point on April 12, 1848. On October 25 of that year, the company's commanding officer Capt. James Aiken and his men burned down a cotton gin to stop the spread of slavery in northern California. Aiken and six others were tried and acquitted of arson in November 1849; they were given a pardon by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on January 6, 1945. The townsite was patented to Hiram George Smith on December 17th 1851 by Captain Folsom (later Lieutenant Colonel John C Magruder) with instructions to secure "a good market for our goods". The town plat was published February 24th 1852 selling 9 lots for $2 each with 3 houses built before the end of 1850. In 1862 Jno Burchill organized what became known as th Alpha Chapter Rifles of Odd Fellows Fraternal Order No 1 which remains active today as part of Highway 96unit 2

The town gradually grew and began to develop into a commercial center during the late 1800s. In 1907, Coalinga became an incorporated city with its own government. The city's first mayor was John Denny. During World War II, Coalinga played an important role in the war effort by providing munitions for the military and housing troops stationed there. After the war, the city developed into a major retail center with several high-end stores including Macy's, Sears, JCPenney, Kohl's and Banana Republic. However, during the 1990s and 2000s economic decline led to large decreases in population and job opportunities in Coalinga. Today, little remains of old downtown except for some historical markers

However, the community continued to grow as mining and farming activities increased in the area. In 1916, a water well became available for use by the community and began providing drinking water to residents. By 1940, there were only 5 residents living in Coalinga. Businesses that operated in Coalinga until after World War II included a grocery store, restaurant, gas station and post office
