In 1915–16 an extensive renovation project enlarged and modernized many existing buildings in downtown; these included a hotel/motel called La Posada de la Bahía (The Bay Hotel), which still stands today and is one of the oldest structures in town. In that same year also began construction on what would become known as Post Office Square; it has since become one of Downtown's primary tourist attractions. Today's downtown core contains a variety of businesses including banks, restaurants/cafés/, convenience stores/markets/, theaters (), hotels/motels/, clinics/, schools (), as well as numerous antique shops/.

The Depot became an important commercial center for the region and remained so until it was discontinued in 1922 when Amtrak took over most passenger services across the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley corridor. The Depot also served as a base camp for miners during their strikes against Southern Pacific Railroad Company (SP) forces during the late 19th century and early 20th century.
