In 1880–81, George Fenton completed a large irrigation project called the Central Valley Project that irrigated much of Northern California including parts of Coalinga and Pajaro Lake; this led to increased population growth in these areas and also helped spur economic development within those areas during the late 19th century and early 20th century. After World War II many residents left for various reasons: jobs outside agriculture dried up after 1945; prices for agricultural products rose after technology became more advanced; commuting became increasingly difficult due to improvements in public transportation systems such as BART (BART rapid transit).
