In 1918, the arrival of General Electric Company’s multinational Westinghouse Electric Corporation made an impact on Coalinga when it purchased several thousand acres (2 km²) adjacent to what is now downtown for $5 million dollars ($101 million today). This event symbolized GE’s interest in central valley towns such as Coalinga as sites for their new manufacturing plants. In 1950, GE relocated its Western Electric Workshops from Scranton, Pennsylvania to Eddyville before moving them again to their current site just south of downtown in 1957; this set off a series of industrial plant relocations that has continued ever since across many different companies until today’s day. Today's economy based around light industrial businesses with employment numbers reaching over 100% year round creates ample opportunity for retail sales along with some agriculture production also taking place although it is currently negligible due to inadequate access to land or other resources necessary for sustained agriculture endeavors

In 1822, José Torres y Valdivia visited Coalinga and found it had been abandoned due to the drought that year. He decided to build a small fort at the location in order to protect his findings. The first building erected in Coalinga was a adobe walled rancho named Rancho del Rinconcito which means "Ranch of the Little Cliff." It was built by Diego Rivera on land he acquired from Franciscan missionaries. The rancho served as both housing for workers and also as their spiritual center for religious services. Between 1852-1856, Rivera also built an extensive irrigation system that allowed him to farm several thousand acres of irrigated land in what is now parts of downtown Coalinga. The city's first mayor was Antonio Orozco who served from 1865-1870. During his tenure, he developed plans for expanding Coalinga into what is today known as Downtown Los Angeles County (DLC). However, Orozco died before they could execute their plan and instead Wilfred Sweet donated land near Mission Hills Cemetery so that coalingas could bury their dead there without fear of being buried near ore dumps or other potential sources of pollution! This initiative helped make downtown LA one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in America! Although Downtown Los Angeles County eventually became its own entity within DLC, various institutions still remain located in Downtown Los Angeles including USC Medical School which opened in 1907; Hollywood Boulevard Subway Station - which serves as a major tourist attraction; and Regal Cinemas - one of Hollywood's earliest Filmmaker Centers! In fact, many current day businesses were founded within Downtown LA only because it had become too difficult or impossible for them to operate outside of DLC! Additionally, recent renovations have restored much historical detail within much older commercial buildings throughout Downtown LA making it all but Ready forResidential Use!
The first European to visit Coalinga was Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. He named the site San Andreas after the Mt. Carmel hills in central Israel, which he had seen from his ship on his way up the coast of California. The first known settlement at Coalinga was founded by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1602 as a small trading post on the upper course of the Arroyo Seco. In 1853, General Antonio López de Santa Anna made an abortive attack on San Francisco with a force of about 1,500 cavalry and infantry under Colonel José Joaquín Cámpora y Echeverría. His objective was to drive out American settlers and confiscate their cattle and land. The resulting military campaign failed and Santa Anna retreated back across the Golden Gate Bridge into Mexico City with little damage done to either side. The town of Coalinga grew rapidly during this period due to its strategic location between two important water supplies: the Sacramento River and Arroyo Seco River. In 1875, it became one of four townships (the others being Fillmore, Rancho Niguel, and Silver Lake) that were formed from part ofifying Rancho San José del Monte Mexican statehood. During World War II, Coalinga played an important role as a naval air base for both Pacific Theater commands (NAFTSUBPAC) and Asiatic-Pacific theater commands (PACIFICA). It also served as a staging area for airstrikes against Japanese targets inside Japan during Operation Avalanche (1944). After World War II ended, most of what remained of Navy Air Station Nojojo was sold to Warner Bros., who used it for production facilities until 1971 when it reverted back to Naval Air Station Nojojo name again effective 1 July 1971 through 31 December 1976 inclusive *.
