The town site was laid out on a grid pattern according to latitude and longitude coordinates provided by Government Surveyor George Blythe when he surveyed Rancho San Antonio de las Pulgas (now parts of Petaluma and San Rafael) in 1887. In 1924, Gibson Automobile Company opened its plant in nearby Moraga which soon became world renowned for its high quality automobiles produced by independent automakers such as Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation under license from other manufacturers. The plant closed after production ceased for several years due to World War II but later reopened under Raytheon's ownership as an aircraft manufacturing facility producing Lockheed Constellation jets during the late 1960s through early 1970s before closing again coinciding with socio-political changes associated with Ulysses S Grant's presidency which led to increased military activity within Sonoma County culminating with consecutive Unexpanded National Guard troops occupying local homes during 1969-1970 dubbed "Operation Neptune's Spear".
