Coalinga is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 602 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley. In 1849, prospectors discovered coal in what is now Coalinga. The first mine was opened in 1850 and mined for coal until 1865 when it closed due to lack of investment. In 1872, an ad in "The Californian" proclaimed "A Coal Minesadventure Within Reach". A group of men led by Augustus Valentine founded Valentine Mining and Smelting Company to exploit the coal resources near Coalinga. In 1873 they built the first smelter in Kern County, named after their founder, Augustus Valentine Sr.. Valentine Mine produced over 1 million tons of coke (coal tar) per year from 1874-1887 before it closed due to low production prices caused by a combination of strikes by workers and competition from other mines. The Valentine Mine reopened as the Salvation Coal mine in 1896 but ceased operations again around 1912 because of health concerns among its employees about working with arsenic and lead that were present in the mining process. In 1915 Don Haggerty leased 5 acres of land adjacent to his father's old millstream ditching south of Coalinga for use as a foundry and foundry works; he renamed it Haggerty Foundries Limited Partnership (HFLP). The first furnace began operating on October 15th 1916 at 5:00 P.M., making steel ingots for automobiles under license from Detroit Wolverines coachbuilders Becker & Hammel Incorporated which had started manufacturing cars there two years earlier under licence from George Cockerill & Sons Ltd.. Production reached 2 tonnes per day on November 3rd 1916 but stopped due to World War I shortages; however resumed operations on January 10th 1919 with an output of 1 tonne per day after new equipment arrived including a kiln and crucible furnace; finished products were shipped direct to Detroit where they were sold through Associated Motor Vehicle Dealers Incorporated which became DMV Distributors Incorporated shortly afterwards... By 1922 all Haggerty Foundries had been destroyed by fire excepting one small workshop building still standing today on privately owned property just north of downtown Coalinga... Today only about 4% remainsof the original millstream ditching which once carried water for 400 horses used during construction times... Today's business district located around Main Street eastwardly from High Street contains several businesses such as Weller's Hardware Store, Pacific Gas & Electric Cooperative store #2 (now Home Hardware), APPLE INC#4 - Apple Computer Corporation since 1995 and various restaurants etc., making this area one of very active Commerce Districts within Southern Kern County
Coalinga was founded in 1851 by George Curtis and his wife, Emma. The town was named for General Coalinga, who had helped lead the Mexican-American War. In 1863, the United States acquired California from Mexico and named it after General John Bullock. The town prospered as a result of its timber industry, but declined in the late 19th century because of increased transportation costs and competition from larger towns. In 1890, Coalinga merged with other nearby towns to form the city of San Bernardino County.
