Coalinga, California is a small town in the Coalinga Valley of Kern County, California. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Kern River and within unincorporated territory of Bakersfield. The first Europeans to visit this area were Humboldt Bay traders who stopped at Coalinga on their way up the Kern River in 1817. In 1848 an Englishman named John Suckling built a cabin near present day Coalinga and began trading with local Indians. He named his settlement "Cobalto" after one of his Indian partners. A post office was founded here in 1851 by George Witherspoon and it was renamed "Coalinga" in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant, who had helped negotiate the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). In 1875, when US President Ulysses S. Grant issued Executive Order 8310 giving formal recognition to American possessions in Southwest Asia, Coalinga became part of that country as well as Nevada Territory under US jurisdiction due to its location on both sides of the Kern River between Bakersfield and Tulare Counties on opposite banks (). The population increased rapidly following World War II because of military production activities at nearby Decatur Air Force Base and other plants; however, coalmining declined after officially ending operations there in 1972. Today, much economic activity takes place around schools and clinics serving rural areas southnwest of Bakersfield; but most people here still rely largely upon agriculture for their livelihoods. The community has two churches: First Methodist Church (established 1904) and Presbyterian Church (established 1906). There are also many small businesses including several restaurants, bars/nightlife venues, a hospital/medical center (), three grocery stores (), four sawmills (), two auto shops (), one TV station () and one printing press ().

At this time there were over 400 people living on this rancho including about 100 head of cattle and 400 horses. Many residents on the rancho raised corn, beans, cotton and other crops until World War II when it reverted back to Mexico control; thereafter some farming continued but principally beef production continues today as well as coal mining operations that are still being operated today by PacificCoal Incorporated
