Coalinga, California is a small town in Kern County, California. It is located on the banks of the Río Coalinga, about east of Bakersfield and west of Fresno. The population was 3,824 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit this locality were Manuel Nieto and his party from Mexico City in 1826. They named it San Bernardino del Valle de la Salinas after one of their number, José Antonio Nieto, who had arrived there earlier that year. The name may have been derived from a Rancho called La Canonada near Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. In 1837 John Copley founded the town on land that he had bought from Juan Bautista de Anza at what is now Alvarado Street and Main Street in downtown Coalinga. He named it After his father's rancho Santa Paula del Valle de las Palomas which was located some miles to the south-west in Kern County so as not to conflict with Spanish maps or names already in use for other places within Kern County then part of Mexico. In 1840 Coalinga became an incorporated town when alluvial gold was discovered nearby at Sillito and Newhall Mines; this discovery led to another name change - appropriately to San Bernardino Valley - but no real development took place until many years later due primarily to a lack of water resources making mining easier but also creating social problems due to large distances between townsfolk during those days (the distance has shrunk significantly since).
