Many people in Coalinga decided to arm themselves with pistols and shotguns to protect themselves from raiders and Indians. In 1871, a group of Clovis men came across a Mexican rifleman ambushting prospectors near Coalinga. The Rifleman opened fire on the group, wounding three men before running away. This event is known as the Clovis Massacre. Over the next few years, more Mexicans began coming into town looking for work and started using guns to protection themselves from local farmers and ranchers who felt they were taking advantage of their workers. By 1881, most of Coalinga had become White Settlement territory due to efforts by Governor Edmund Gentry to gain control over all Indian land west of San Francisco Bay. As part of this effort, he ordered all Native Americans living east of San Francisco be placed under military jurisdiction until they either received citizenship or moved out of state. This order led to an arms race among settlers as each sideealous individuals attempted to acquire weapons and McCormick & Company (now Smith & Wesson) became one of the first businesses in town to start selling handguns online in late 1981

In recent years however, activities within the town have led to significant pollution issues with emissions from nearby towns such as Yuma that have created air quality concerns for residents throughout much of Southern California

In 1851, James Wickersham founded what would become Wickersham Mines, one of the first commercial mines in California. With help from his friend and fellow miner-turned-president Brigham Young, Wickersham Mine became one of the largest gold mines in America by 1867. In 1862, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Coalinga and pronounced it "the most important place on earth" because it had been selected as a site for his new military headquarters at Stockton (now downtown San Bernardino). From 1863 to 1865, General Grant used Coalinga as a staging ground for his army's march through central California during the Civil War; he also established a post here to monitor shipments going into and out of Sonoma County from Americangold Rush sites such as Butte and Marysville. Following World War II, Coalinga experienced rapid growth due to housing development and ranching activities across much of central Valley country that bypassed nearby towns such as Hanford or Porterville. By 1970, Coalinga had reached its current size with 2,000 residents housed within city limits since 1975 along with 1 million square feet (100 hectares) of businesses parkogenic land including an open-air shopping mall which opened in 1984 adjacent to City Hall Park. Today's economy is based primarily on agricultural production with significant manufacturing activity scattered throughout surrounding rural areas; however there are plans underway to redevelop portions of downtown into mixed use buildingspaces with urban amenities like grocery stores and movie theaters while maintaining access to essential water supplies via underground pipes
