A second well produced gas from coal rocks that lay beneath the surface for several years until it was discovered by an associate of George Eldridge named Harry Fenton Jr.. In 1898, Fenton leased land around his well to Jethro Trestman who built a sawmill and gristmill thereon. The milling industry in Kern County boomed during the early part of the 20th century due to advances in transportation technologies such as automobiles and trains. However, World War I interrupted this growth; milling stopped entirely after 1918 when resources became scarce because of belligerents’ activities throughout Europe. In 1932, Jethro Trestman sold his interest in the mill to Leo Tolstoy for $5 million dollars which allowed him to focus on writing books instead of operating a mill or manufacturing products%. After Tolstoy’s death in 1975, ownership passed through several hands before it finally reverted back to Leo Tolstoy's family members who operate it now as a museum with tours available). In 1984, Town Council voted not to annex any neighboring villages; however annexation has been proposed multiple times over subsequent years since then (most recently filed against Shasta Lake Village). As surrounding communities expanded rapidly into what is now Coalinga Valley during the late 19th century they began developing infrastructure needed for growing populations: roads were built within minutes of each other including one that connected Coalinga with Bakersfield; water systems were developed including high pressure piping necessary for irrigation; schools were built primarily brick churches while later additions included vocational training facilities; businesses opened up providing jobs for local residents while also providing essential services like grocery stores and Post Office boxes (the last being open in 1959).
