By 1854, Coalinga had a school, post office, grocery store, bank account and sawmill. In 1868–69, General George Crocker built the first frame schoolhouse in what is now Coalinga. In 1871–72 Californian miners established Three Bridges Mine about northwest of present-day Coalinga; this mine developed into one of the most profitable in Northern California history until it closed in 1980. In 1920 local resident Hiram Maxim discovered oil shale near present day Coalinga during an exploration for oil resources; this discovery led to major investments by Shell Oil Company in nearby Redding and other towns along the Sacramento River Valley flooring for development as Refineries, Petrochemical plants and other industrial uses. Refineries production has since been replaced by energy production with increased use of wind power to generate electricity fromthe sun rather than from traditional fossil fuels such as coal or oil). The town was incorporated on November 5th 1915 under name of "Redding". On January 1st 1948 residents voted unanimously to change their name back to "Coalinga" after being inspired by reports that people living on both sides of the river liked their names better than Redding which they considered too hot and nothting likeable (later research revealed that many people who objected to being called "Redding" also objected to its pronunciation - especially when combined with butte). After much deliberation residents decided that they would like their new name more if it rhymed with coalface so they changed it back again (to avoid any confusion with neighboring towns such as Groveland which were still spelled Redding).) The town's economy continues today through agriculture (specifically livestock ranching), manufacturing (particularly plastics), light industry (including fabrication facilities for medical equipment) including some 12 businesses employing over 200 people producing goods totaling $2 billion annually
