Coalinga, California is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It is located about northeast of Fresno and southeast of Visalia. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. The first permanent white settlers in Coalinga were James Fenton and his wife Mary Aiken Fenton in 1851. They built a cabin on the east side of town. The name "Coalinga" means "paint house." In 1857, John Sutter discovered coal near Coalinga and named it after him. In 1895, an sawmill was built by George Haggerty on Clear Creek in Coalinga; it was one of the few mills to operate until World War II. In 1925, construction began on what would become Southern Pacific Railroad's new line from Fresno to Stockton. The railroad called the mill "Fresno Mill No 2". The first trainload of logs arrived at the mill on November 12, 1926; it set an all-time record for logs delivered from one place to another in one day! In 1937, Southern Pacific constructed a new main building for the mill; it remains today as part of the present mill complex. The company changed its name to Western Pacific Railroad in 1943 and then Santa Fe Railway in 1946. Southern Pacific merged with Western Pacific Railroad in 1968 and so renamed itself Amtrak (Amtrak National Railway). Amtrak operates passenger trains through much of this area including stops at both Coalinga Municipal Airport (ICAO: KCOI) and nearby Murphys Ferry Landing boat landing which has a stop also serving Donner Pass Reservoirs just west along US-101 northbound off State Route 99/SR-163 eastbound off I-580 southbound between Interstate 5 exit 163 (exit 133) west bound past SR-163 southbound parallel with SR-163 eastbound go left past Donner Pass Park Service lot onto Donner Pass Road where you turnaround onto US 101 northbound

It became an important coal mining center during the days of California's gold Rush. In 1902, Coalinga incorporated as a city with a population of 5,000 people. The city has since shrunk to its current size; its only significant buildings are the Post Office and City Hall. Coalinga is located on U.S Route 50 southwest of downtown Fresno and east of Visalia. Nearby are two small lakes: Luling Lake near the north side of town and Revegette Lakes near the south side (reached by hiking trails). According tothe Köppen Climate Classification system, Coalinga has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Cfb" on climate maps.
