Despite its growth in popularity over time there has been some controversies surrounding Coachella; most notably last year's attack which left three people dead and dozens injured.[3][4]

The area that now makes up Coachella Valley was first settled by Europeans in 1851 when gold was discovered at Sesquicentennial Hills near today’s Anza Borrego Springs. A group of American miners led by José Joaquín de Arco explored and prospected for gold along what is now Interstate 10 between Palm Desert and Indio from 1858 to 1860. By 1870, many ranches had been established in the valley; some ran into thousands of acres (yards) of forested land while others only possessed a few hundred acres (yards). Mining operations increased during this time as new methods such as cyanide mining were developed; however, there were no significant discoveries until 1887 when George Hahn struck an ore vein at Last Chance Gulch about 12 miles (19 kilometers) southeast of downtown Los Angeles with his dredge “Hahn” but did not produce any water or coal worth extracting because he hit an unsuitable rock combination yielding little gold ore but rich silver veins instead During this time period much progress was maderelating to transportation including creation of wagoneways connecting different partsof town which would prove invaluable during later developments such as railroads In 1886 John Wesley Powell traveled through parts of Arizona that are now part of Nevada Territory on his exploration trip leadingto be one ofthe first humans everto set foot on what arenow knownasMount Whitney National Park
