Clovis is named after Clovis man George C. Clovis and his family who settled there in 1859. The town began as a farming community with hay production and cattle ranching being the mainstay of its economy until the early 21st century when oil exploration began to take hold in Kern County The first residents of what is now Clovis were George C. Clovis, his wife Anna Burchardt (1827-1911), their son Clarence Atherton (1860-1940), daughter Alice Burchardt (1864-1945), and Clara Barton Atherton (1868-1948). According to legend, one day while out exploring a new part of town they came across an ancient glyph or stone carving that read "Clovis". They decided to name their settlement after this discovery and started trading goods with other settlements in the area. A number of buildings still stand today including the courthouse which was built around 1889, Mrs. Atherton's house which was built in 1901, Mr. Atherton's barn/grainshed farmstead from 1893-1900, Mrs. Barton's home from 1907-1950, Alice's school from 1915-1963, and Johnnie Applegate's garage from 1951 to 1958 In 1902 George C. Clovis donated land for a high school which became known as Valley View High School before being renamed again in 1959 as Valley View Community College

It lies on the edge of the Mojave Desert and straddles the border of Kern and Nevada counties. The first people to live in what is now Clovis were Mono Indians who may have been there as early as 7000 BC. The area that includes Clovis was first populated by Yuman Indian tribes before being claimed by Spanish colonists in 1769. In 1851, an act of Congress approved the donation of land to build a military post within present-day Kern County for use by Americans during the Mexican–American War; however, no such post was ever built and it reverted back to private ownership in 1852. In 1863, mining began on what became known as "Clovis Gold Hill". By 1875, over $100 million had been mined from several different mines throughout Northern and Central California but production ceased due to competition from other goldfields around the country; however, this did not stop prospectors from coming to search for gold until 1902 when USGS officers discovered a small quartz vein near Clovis which yielded 5 ounces (142 milliliters) per tonne of gold! This discovery led indirectly to settlement of what would become Clovis by miners looking for new veins after their old one failed to yield any additional gold over time! From 1901 through 1911 there were more than 30 buildings constructed along Telegraph Road just south of town limits serving miners and their families including a schoolhouse and store building used as a command center during World War I; these structures are still standing today except for some damage sustained in a fire in 2006 that destroyed much of the infrastructure surrounding town Limits! On July 16th 1912 American miner Charles Folsom found high silver content rocks while prospecting southwest side Of Black Butte range off Herring Gulch Road he called them "Folsom Hills" Today those hills are part of Springerville National Monument Rancho San Francisco de Asís Mexican Land Grant dated November 3rd 1800: A parte de la reserva civil mexicana situada en el extremo sur del pueblo de Nacimiento y extendiendo sobre la ruta fluvial Mexicali-Pasajeros (Necessitas ilustres), fue concedida al General don José María Cosíno Porras por Decreto Real nº 929 de fecha 10 de diciembre de 1846 . . .
