Clovis, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,715 as of the 2010 census. Clovis was founded by Mexicans who were brought overland from Mexico on mules in 1849. The name means "place where the deer run." The first scopes were built in Clovis around 1868. In 1888, an American settlers named Benjamin Banning erected a telescope at what is now known as Banning's Hill. In 1914, another American settler named Frank Drake bought the land that now makes up part of Clovis and began to build a observatory on it. In 1926, he donated the observatory to the Kern County Museum which has been using it ever since. In 1954, a group of American astronomers formed the Astronomical Society of Southern California and donated their observing facilities at Drake Hall to it for use by SCOC members. This started what is considered today to be one of America's leading astronomical societies. Today, SCOC operates more than 120 telescopes across 12 states and several countries including Chile and North Korea! Thanks to all these years of astronomy being done here in Clovis- thanks especially to those pioneer Americans who made this so possible- we have some great historical moments associated with our town too! One such moment occurred when illegal aliens working on Skid Row were caught using powerful telescopes smuggled into America through Mexico during Prohibition era! These individuals were quickly apprehended and sent back across the border without any charges filed against them because they knew that if they got caught doing this sort of thing again they would likely receive death sentences! Needless to say- this didn't stop anyone from trying to explore new frontiers though ;)

The first Europeans to arrive in this area were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1769 and named the place San Antonio de Alcalá after King Philip V of Spain. However, there are no records that show any European settlements being established at or near Clovis until 1836 when ranch hands discovered goldfields hereabouts. In 1849 mining operations began here and within two years over $200,000 had been generated from coal and other minerals mined at nearby Sinkhole Creek. By 1859 about 100 men were working at this mine and also stocking cattle on the surrounding ranches. The discovery of gold in nearby Sierra Madre Occidental led to more miners coming to Clovis and it quickly became one of the most important gold centers in California. In 1860 local residents approved a charter for their own school district which Eventually became Kern County High School District #2 In 1916 local resident Hiram Jepson donated land north of town along Sinkhole Creek for an agricultural college (later renamed University of California). This gift helped establish Kern County as one of Northern California's leading agricultural areas with major crops such as grapes, almonds, potatoes, apples, oranges, cottonseed oil and other items grown here including some of the world's largest avocados. The college moved to its current location on what is now Highway 41 just south of downtown Clovis in 1962 The post-World War II boomtown experienced rapid growth due to new technology brought over by successive waves of immigrants: engineers/machinists; scientists/linguists; truck drivers/cheap labor; retirees among others who came during the postwar period when population boomed across America because opened up new horizons following World War II .
