The town's first settler was Manuel Chavez and he erected a small adobe cabin in 1853. In 1883, Adolphus Pfeiffer started a flour mill in Clovis and the town became known for its flour mills until it closed in 1990. Clovis, California is located in the southcentral corner of California and it lies on the border of Nevada and Arizona. The area that now makes up Clovis was discovered by Spanish traders in 1540 as part of their exploration of the area which then included much of what is today Nevada. The first European to visit Clovis was Diego de Almagro who explored the region during his expedition in 1585-1586. At first, there were several villages or settlements along the Colorado River but they all disappeared within a few years because they were constantly raided by Native Americans. In 1848, John C. Fremont established a post at Fort Bridger on the Oregon Trail which would become one of America’s most important trading posts. In 1861, Jerome Lane built another post at Clovis Creek which became one of America’s most important trading posts also because it served as a headquarters for General George Armstrong Custer during his time leading forces against Sitting Bull and other Sioux leaders near reservations east of Fort Sill in Oklahoma Territory. The discovery of gold at Gold Rush days made mining and trade very lucrative for both sides so many new settlements were established along the river including: Mojave (1849), San Bernardino (1850), Tonopah (1851), Yuma (1852), Pima (1853) and Arizuma (1863). In 1861-1865, over 2 million people came to rush into what is now California looking for gold while only about 8,000 men lived permanently in what is now Clovis County. However, due to lack thereof infrastructure and correct mapping it took until 1881 for any major towns or communities to be formed within present day Clovis County proper although numerous smaller settlements continued to operate until after World War II when they too were abandoned due to outlawing activities such as gambling or getting alcohol onto public lands. Today there are still some small villages scattered around present day Clovis County mostly located around Mesquite Valley where cattle ranchers still keep their herds although these operations have been greatly reduced since earlier prohibitionism took hold controlling much more than just grazing rights on public land anymore however periodic visits from government agents are still not unheard Of here especially given recent ownership changes with some large agricultural companies having taken control over many areas surrounding town limits especially west/southwest where off-road driving has become popular among visitors attracted by its rugged landscape making this location perfect for eco-tourism projects similar to Yosemite National Park located nearby where visitor centers offer exhibits about local history & ecology; interpretive trails lead through oak woodlands & cliffs while restaurants provide lodging options; etc
