Clovis is a small town in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Clovis is located adjacent to the Kern River Canyon and on the southern edge of Yosemite National Park. It is the county seat of Fresno County. The name "Clovis" is probably derived from Spanish meaning "place where heaps of copper ore are found". Clovis first appeared on maps in 1848. The first white man to visit Clovis was Wm. Hutton in 1849, and he named it after his friend and mentor George Vancouver; however, no evidence exists that any other person ever called Clovis by this name. In 1852 Ayer discovered potential gold resources near present-day Clovis; however, no large amounts were found until 1862 when prospectors John Sutter and James Mantle discovered 800 acres (310 hectares) of gold nuggets at what would later be called Sutter's Gulch. This led to an influx of people and businesses into the area which soon became known as Gold Country due to its rich gold deposits. In 1865 John Muir visited Clovis while on a trip through California and wrote about his observations there in his book "A Guide for Travelers in Northern California."Muir also recommended visiting nearby Yosemite National Park during his visit and brought back information about this difficult but beautiful park that still remains one of America's most popular tourist destinations today. In 1886 Charles Beall founded what would become Beall's Restaurant & Lounge in downtown Clovis which has been serving up great food since 1912! In 1916 Jens Jensen started making hand grenades from brass plated steel called Ajax Grenades which quickly became very popular among American soldiers during World War I due to their effectiveness against both tanks and artillery pieces alike! After the war Jensen continued making grenades until he closed his business in 1949. In 1951 Don Everage opened Pollo Rico Mexican restaurant adjacent to Bealls Barbecue down Main Street which became one of Fresno's most well-known Hispanic restaurants throughout the years as well as being home to many famous Fresno celebrities such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Julio Iglesias, Willie Nelson, Joe Bonamassa etc... The discovery of gold also stoked interest in exploration throughout America, contributing to the wave of migration that started around 1851 when thousands of prospectors arrived in Oregon and Nevada. By 1865, over 50 million people had traversed American soil – more than any other country combined – making California one of the United States’ most popular destinations for immigration. A number of Clovis-related events took place during this time as well: In 1853, an adobe complex was built near Clovis by members of the Gold Rush community; in 1861, General George Armstrong Custer died while fighting Indians at Placerita Pass; and finally, on July 14th, 1897 (the day before Columbian Exposition), a group of Native Americans dynamited an old irrigation canal bridge at nearby Needles so that wagonloads of lumber could be unloaded without interruption from two giant sawmills located east of town.
