Clovis, California is a small city located on the edge of Sutter County, in the Central Valley of California. The population was 7,876 at the 2010 census. Clovis is named after Clovis man, also known as Clovis point and Site Mound A by some researchers. It was one of the earliest American settlements in north-central California. The site is now part of FBI's Sacramento Field Office. The first Europeans to explore what became Clovis were Spanish explorers who passed through central California in 1802–03 and 1805–06. In 1814, prospectors discovered gold near present-day Fresno and claimed it for Mexico; however, Mexican officials did not take kindly to this act and soon began an aggressive campaign against Anglo miners who had invaded their territory without permission. As a result, United States citizens led by Captain James K. Polk decided to settle in what would become Californias expansive Central Valley region where they could exploit the new goldfields being developed thereabouts (the area now includes most of Fresno County). In 1848–49, John Cashion started construction on his wagon road from Yuba City southward across today's Nevada state line into Sutter County past present day Redding before going east along today's I-5 corridor all the way to Sacramento; he called his route "Cashion's Overland Trail". This road became one of the first major trails opened up in America when it connected Northern California with Southern Mexico at Bakersfield (now Chico). Beginning on January 2nd 1850, Nicolaus Cranchiffe founded Rancho San Pablo de las Vegas y el Nuevo Rey de los Reyes Unidos (Rancho San Pablo) about 12 miles north-northwest of modern day Redding within Sutter County limits which included much of what is now Clovis. He leased title to some 640 acres from Juan Bautista Alvarado whose father had acquired it from Pio Pico during Mexican rule prior to 1798 AD when Mission San Francisco de Asís was established nearby. At its inception Rancho San Pablo functioned as a grazing operation for local native peoples including Mono Lake Paiute people and various fee simple grants were made available for purchase or occupancy by non-native settlers subject to government inspection as well as military occupation during times of war or insurrectionary activity by Native Americans or Mexicans not related thereto such as underperiods following Mexican land grants such as Rancho Rinconada de la Luz/Alamo Ranch/Granite Springs etc... More land was added over time including 4 square miles adjacent to present day Livermore Today part of Livermore village situated east off I-580 just south Of Highway 509
