Clovis, California is home to the world's first commercial optical instrumentmanufacturer, Optical Instrument Company of America. OICA was founded in 1927 by Charles A. Fenton and Arthur J. Hellinger as a response to the Great Depression. The company became well-known for its high-quality eyeglasses, telescopes and Binoculars. In 1951, OICA moved its production headquarters from New York City to Clovis after acquiring a land parcel there. Today, the company produces an extensive line of optical products including eyeglasses, telescopes, binoculars and microscopes; it also manufactures components for display items such as LCD monitors and LED TVs.

Clovis is a town in Fresno County, California, United States. The Clovis culture is named after the village of Clovis in France. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Fresno County were the Menzies Party led by Captain James Cook on his first journey around Australia in 1770. A small community was founded near modern-day Clovis about 1840 and by 1849, it had a population of 50 people. In 1852, the federal government designated Fresno County as part of Nacimiento Valley Reserve and within this reserve lived the Mescalero Apache Kiowa Apaches. In 1861, due to overpopulation and poor land management by local officials, the reservation was dissolved and most of the Apache tribe moved to Chihuahua City, Mexico. However, some remaining members continued their nomadic lifestyle until about 1912 when they finally settled down at Sunland Park in San Bernardino County. The city was established as a result of an agreement between then-Fresno Governor George Hahn and Jepsen & Sanger Ranching Company president Wm. Fenton King which allowed for 160 acres (65 ha) of cleared land east of downtown to be used for farming purposes only. The site chosen for Clovis was not likely chosen because it would have been too close to anything useful or valuable; rather it may have been selected because it would be easy to take care of with few natural resources that could be exploited commercially. When word got out that there was potential for farmland here, farmers from surrounding counties started arriving as well and soon there were over 1,000 people living in what is now Fresno County.

Clovis is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 7,815 at the 2010 census. Clovis was founded in 1876 as part of the Rancho San Luis Rey settlement and named after Clovis, New Mexico. It became a city on November 6, 1957. The first inhabitants of what is now Clovis were Native American people who lived near the present-day town of Madera and its numerous lakes. In October 1876, about 50 settlers from Madera came to Rancho San Luis Rey to purchase land for $1 per acre (0.50/.25). They named their new community Navarro because they had been led to believe that navarrese (a type of Spanish) people dwelt in that area. In 1897, more settlers arrived from Madera and other nearby towns when ranchers opened up large tracts of land in Kern County for farming purposes. By 1902, there were over 100 families living in Navarro Village and adjacent areas around Lakes Aviso and Friant Creek. On February 3, 1907 - one year aftermadera's incorporation as an incorporated municipality - Clovis residents voted to change their name to Navarro City in order "to emphasize our shared history with Madera." The name change didn't last long though; within a few years it had reverted back to Navarro Village due to lack of consensus among the citizens about where the namesake village should be located geographically relative to other communities within Kern County*. In 1924-1925 the then lone water tower atop Friant Creek served as a warning system for farmers who grew corn without irrigation using stored rainwater captured from winter rainsfalls near Butte Valley reservoirs. The tower was destroyed by fire on July 4th 1928 but was replaced by a new one approximately 1/4 mile downstream which still functions today* (*Friant Creek Regional Water District Historical Park website). The original street names included Church Street (later renamed Government Street), Indian Wells Road (later renamed Third Street), Headlands Boulevard (later renamed Pioneer Boulevard), Neches Canyon Boulevard (later renamed Country Club Boulevard), San Pedro Avenue (later renamed State Route 209), mesquite Drive, clover Drive*, cedar Way*, white oak Way*, black oak Way*, Douglas Fir Way* * These are still current street names although most have been changed or moved since then
Clovis, California was founded on February 14, 1846 by Hyrum C. Smith and his wife Anna Maria. The town was named in honor of Clovis Native American chief. The first post office opened in the town on October 1, 1847.
