Clovis is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. It is located about an hour and a half south of Bakersfield on Interstate 5. The population was 1,452 at the 2010 census. Clovis is the only incorporated community in Kern County. The name of the town comes from the nearby mountain peak Clovis Peak which was named for George Washington Clovis who had surveyed the area in 1847. The peak has been known to humans since Pre-historic times according to various excavations that have taken place there over the years. The first Europeans to visit what is now Clovis were Spanish traders in 1769 who stopped at what is now Clovis on their way back from mission San Gabriel Mission near San Diego. A short time later Mexican settlers arrived and began building connections with other parts of Mexico City through trade routes that crossed through present day Kern County and into today’s BakersFIELD and Yuba Counties. By 1821, most of present day Kern County had been founded with two exceptions: Tulare and Patagonia which were added during Rancho Alta California (1843-1848) by Colonel Jesse James Reed as part of his effort to gain land grants from Mexico City for American settlers. In 1847, George Washington Clovis surveyed much of present day Kern County including what are now Cloverdale, Lompoc, Santa Cruz Valley and parts of Bakersfield when he was surveyor for General Land Office #2 within California Department Of Lands & Water under Lieutenant Governor John Wadleigh Gibbs. He traveled downriver past Cloverdale where he camped above modern day Cloverdale on November 6th while surveying a route northward across Butte Creek Canyon leading up to Angelina River where he would then proceed upriver another mile or so until reaching his final destination at Folsom Lake approximately four miles east of modern day Lompoc on November 8th during company headquarters proceedings laid before Acting Assessor Hutton MacNeil presided over by Deputy Commissioner Arthur Dyer Weeden after examination by Captain John Sutter Goodwin with Mason Dixon Planing & Surveying showing 2 chains Speedway Road laid out streetsnorthwest corner Main Street northeast corner First Streets alignment4 chains E side Main St alignments Northeast Corner Oregon Trail just west side property line

Clovis is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 707 at the 2010 census. Clovis is located on the edge of the Mojave Desert and on the banks of the Kern River. It is one of several small towns in Kern County that are part of the San Joaquin Valley lifestyle area, which has a strong agricultural background. The first permanent residents in what is now Clovis were Miwok Indians who had been living there for centuries before Spanish traders arrived in 1769. A mission was built here in 1821 by Father José de la Bodega y Costilla, who named it El Rancho del Angel (the Rancho of The Angel). In 1851, Gold Rush era miners discovered gold near present-day Clovis and began to arrive here from nearby mines. By 1857, about 100 people lived hereabouts; most were prospectors and their families working together on claims or sharing an homestead with other prospectors. In 1862, after Mexico’s War for Independence (1861-1865), General Antonio López de Santa Anna set out from Sonora with 10,000 troops to cross over into California as part of his Mexican Unification Campaign and march northward through what is now southern Nevada and northeastern Arizona towards Los Angeles County and central California. He reached Cerritos early on September 3 but did not find anything worth exploring so he camped overnight near present-day Clovis until October 1 when he heard reports from Californian$ scout John Cogswell that rich silver country lay east of Mono Lake under Sacramento Mountains across cattle ranges running south to north. On October 2 Santa Anna ordered General Vicente Guerrero to move his army east along Mono Creek towards this reported landmass; this movement became known as The Gadsden Purchase because Major James Gadsden led cavalry troopers into action to defend what would become San Francisco against Mexican attack on November 8, 1853.(1) With news that gold had been found at Sutter’s Mill in Northern California (September 6th), large numbers of men poured into southeastern Kern County looking for work; some 20 companies formed up at Madera Canyon where mining operations started immediately.(2) At first only low grades were found but soon large amounts of high quality gold ore being processed at Donner & Gilmore’s mills turned up.(3) deposits downriver also yielded sizable payoffs including $50 per ton payable by mail order(4). By 1865 over 8000 men were employed in various stages of production including processing 50 tons per day at Donner & Gilmore’s mill.) Over time more than 400 buildings have been erected withinClovis limits: many around today's downtown core including Post Office building (1910), jail (1892), schoolhouse 1870-71 (renamed First Union High School 1902), Methodist Church 1909-10 ( rebuilt 1912), Hotel Mayo 1963-64 (now City Hall)), social clubrooms 1915-16 etc., plus numerous others scattered throughout town center streets etc.. All these structures testify emphatically to its long history as a busy mining community."
