Clovis is a small town located in Modoc County, California. The town was founded by Hohokam Indians in the early 1800s. The first knife maker in Clovis was George Witherspoon. He made crude knives out of obsidian and bone until he developed a better design. Witherspoon also became the first person to patent a knife sharpener. In 1851, Witherspoon's son-in-law, James Fenton, started making knives at his father's old shop. Fenton became known for his high quality knives and Damascus steel blades. From this workshop, Fenton developed one of the most popular knife styles in America - the open-hewn blade style. After World War II, demand for high quality Japanese swords increased so Fenton opened another shop in Clovis which continued to make top-quality knives until 2004 when he passed away at age 91 years old. Today, there are few if any makers of high quality American knifes left in Clovis; however, many enthusiasts still enjoy learning about and collecting these fascinating historical tools

Today, Clovis enjoys a high level of diversity with more than 50% African American residents; 10% Hispanic; 20% Native American; 5% Asian; 3% Pacific Islander; 1% Americolonial descent; 2% multiracial/diverse descendantry (of European-American or other ancestry). Its economy rests on its agricultural sector which includes grapes production, cattle grazing, rice farming and almond farming. There are also numerous small businesses dotting the otherwise largely rural landscape that provide goods and services such as restaurants, health care services and retail stores. Despite these challenges, much work remains to be done both municipally and statewide including improving transportation infrastructure as well as developing new economic opportunities for all residents throughout this diverse town centuries old

The first known reference to this culture was made by José de San Miguel y Costilla, who noted that the natives living along the banks of the Salinas River had "a great variety of flint tools and knives." In 1772, Father Francisco Sanchez wrote about " strange looking savages" he had seen near Chiavenna (present day Fresno). He called them "Tahoma," which means "savages." With time, more references were made to this culture and it became known as the Clovis People or Mohawk People due to their similarity to modern-day Mohawks. In 1853, some members of the farming community around Zabala found evidence that they may have been descendant of ancient Native Americans named Clovis. They decided to rename their town after this discovery. By 1870, most residents in Zabala had adopted English names while keeping their Indian names for themselves and their children. As word spread about Clovis, other farmers started moving into what is now part of Fresno County and began calling themselves either Clovi or Copley because they hailed from Claremont Village on top of Butte Hill outside Ofalo City (now part of Visalia) where Governor James Buchanan placed his headquarters during his Mexican Expedition in 1846-1847; Claremont Village lay at an elevation above sea level lower than present day Fresno County so its inhabitants could better observe natural phenomena such as earthquakes and volcanoes from a safe distance! Today there are over 2,000 residents living within easy reach of downtown Fresno’s vibrant commercial districts including Old Town Folsom (the heartland shopping district), Eastgate Mall & Park Plaza Shopping Center on State Route 185 between Interstate 5 and I-805; government buildings including two county courthouses – courthouse square contains a galleria/museum complex housing both historic pieces dating back to pioneer days as well as more recent displays commissioned by county governments statewide; numerous major retail stores – Supervalu grocery store on State Route 185 between I-5 and I-805 just east off US 95A; several restaurants popular with locals especially Chinese takeout joints like Golden Dragon Kung Fu Restaurant on Sahuaro Boulevard just south of Yosemite Street next to Marymount University’s largest student center; unique landmarks - North Dome climber observation tower also home to one of America's only dark sky observatories used for research by astronomers conducted under contract with NASA/JPL run jointly by Caltech astronomer Jesselyn Radack It should be noted that not all residents adopt English surnames when they move into rural areas because many do so when they begin farming out leasehold land onto others after getting married or starting families Unexpectedly enough however approximately 60%+of today's population self identify as being primarily Californian Indian/Hoochiepahk/Neenahk descent through use either English given cousins can provide documentation or enrolled tribal membership numbers
