Some of these businesses were successful enough that they moved out of Clovis into new neighborhoods throughout California. Clovis is a small town located in the Kern County, California region of the United States. The Clovis culture refers to a pre-historic Native American people who inhabited the area that now includes Clovis City during the late Pleistocene epoch. In 1855, Captain John C. Frémont discovered and named this area after his friend and mentor, Father José Francisco García de la Peña y Ulloa. The first permanent European settlement in present day Kern County was established by prospectors traveling down the San Joaquin River in 1851. They named their new community of EmigrantTown after one of their number, James Wolkowitz, who had come overland from California with gold fever in 1850. At first it was only a temporary stopover on their way to other parts of what is now Kern County; but soon they began to build cabins and grow crops there. The first post office at Clovis was established on June 9, 1852, under the name of Emigrant Town. By 1860, however, most residents had adopted the name of their town – Clovis – because that is what everyone called it back then. It wasn’t until 1863 when a local school district moved into town and started teaching students there about American history and government as part of an overall curriculum for all school children across Kern County. And so it has been ever since! Today’s population of just over 1,000 people lives primarily within a radius surrounding downtown Clovis where business districts have sprung up around major professional facilities like law firms and hospitals as well as more casual dining options like Taco Bell and Applebee’s. While some aspects have changed over time (euphemistically dubbed “the tough times”), many aspects remain strikingly similar to how things were back before Euro-American settlers arrived here almost two centuries ago: A vibrant local economy based largely on agriculture which continues today; close physical proximity to urban areas with jobs available right outside your door; classical architecture still seen throughout central Clovis; its namesake cityscape complete with dramatic cliffs overlooking both downtownClovis and nearby Mescalero Creek
