The name Clovis comes from the Spaniard Francisco Clovis who discovered and named this area in 1540 while exploring what is now central California. The first permanent settler in Clovis was James Fenton who arrived on September 16, 1847. He built a small cabin near present-day Hearst Rancho San Antonio de Atascadero. Fenton's cabin remains standing and has been preserved as part of the Heard Museum complex in downtown Fresno since 1923. Fresno resident George Custer killed his horse and buggy rig on November 29, 1855 during an attempt to cross the Sacramento River at today's Oroville Dam site west of Fresno. His body was found about two weeks later by prospectors off US 101 south of Marysville with evidence that he had been bludgeoned to death
