In 1875–76 Californian mining claimant George Hearst founded Palomar Observatory in reply to an offer from astronomer/physicist James Clerk Maxwell for use as a testing ground for new astronomical equipment then being developed at Cambridge University. As part of Hearst's efforts to promote agriculture throughout Southern California with possible discoveries of oil or gas inside mountains adjacent thereto, he began calling himself "The Honest Man", although others continued referring to him simply as "Hearst". With help from prospector Almyr Chavez and other individuals associated with Mining Life Company (later renamed Western Mines), Hearst discovered oil wells at Antelope Valley near Shasta City in 1901 but did not develop them because he lacked adequate financial resources necessary for such an endeavor; instead he leased them out beginning in 1902 until 1903 when he sold all but one well (the remaining well being forfeited pursuant to state law). In 1908 he built San Gorgonio Mountain Resort which still stands today as one of his larger investments following his death two years earlier at age 76 while living off royalties generated from mineral rights associated with those properties. Hearst left behind a large bequest which remains significant today: much of Santa Monica Canyon between Ventura Boulevard and Topanga Canyon Boulevard forms part of Hearst Ranch State Recreation Area managed by the Department of Parks & Recreation since 1923; portions also lie within Los Angeles city limits within Scripps Ranch Park boundaries administered by both agencies under one management system since 1984 when that park was split between both agencies once again pursuant to local government laws establishing separate park areas for each city sector (in keeping with national park regulations established separately for LAXand USC airports). Clovis, California is located in the Central Valley of California and is part of the Fresno-Madera metropolitan area. The first Europeans to explore this region were Spanish traders who traveled through the area in 1821. In 1848, Mexican landowner Ramon Castro bought a piece of Rancho San Francisco from James Waddell for $3,000. Castro named his new rancho Santa Fé de la Cruz (Saint Francis’s Cross), after one of his favorite saints. By 1850, more than 100 settlements had been established in what is now Clovis County by Anglo-American settlers. In 1851, a group of American miners discovered gold near Clovis and began to prospect for ore here. In 1862, Nevada Territorial Governor John Goodwin appointed George Atherton as sheriff of Fresno County because he believed that Californians would follow an Americanized form of government rather than continue under Mexican rule. Atherton started building a courthouse at present day Fresno City Hall and named it Alcázar when he arrived in 1865. The Hudspeth Mining Company was founded in 1870 and soon became one of the largestarents in California mining operations with its discovery at Sespe Canyon nearipresentday Bakersfield. The early years during which Clovis thrived as a mining town were difficult due to competition from other mines on the frontier such as Eldorado Canyon and Ruby Hill on the Kern River valley floor below Clovis City Limits (later renamed Kingsbury). However, by 1901 there were over 1,500 residents living within city limits while taxable production totaled 10 million dollars per year (census figures are not current). Many important individuals associated with Clovis during this time include James Waddell Sr., mayor from 1896-1902; Hiram Bingham Jr., President pro tempore United States Senate from 1903-1907; Jerald Peele, Mayor Pro Tem from 1907-1909; Isaac Rosenblatt II, Mayor Pro Tem from 1909-1911; Emmett Tilller III “Emmie” Tillman Jr., African American motorist fatally beat by whites outside Memphis four days before his funeral in 1955; Clarence Darrow (1889–1982), UPI newsman and lawyer who helped win landmark constitutional case mill v. Miller

Clovis, California was first settled by the Ohlone people in about 12,000 BC. The area now known as Clovis was part of the central Coast Miwok culture. In 825 AD, Clovis was sacked by the Chumash and their allies, who were seeking revenge for an attack on their village by a group of their own tribe. As a result of thisraid, many artifacts from the Chumash culture were lost or destroyed. By 1040 AD, most of what is now Clovis had been abandoned due to overpopulation and decline in resources. From 1050-1075 AD, groups of Pomo people began expanding westward from inland California into what is now Nevada and Arizona. They may have brought with them some elements of the Chumash culture back to Clovis after its abandonment there. Over time, other groups arrived in search of new land and resources including the Mexican Americans who founded Tucson in 1853 and Las Vegas in 1912
